I made the Early Summer, Eden Valley series in response to the wonderful colours of the Eden Valley landscape in the early summer of 2011. The local landscape can be so dramatic - the colours change throughout the year, and no year is quite the same as the one before. In addition, the textures of the grasses, and trees contribute to the astonishing beauty of this area. Fabrics used are silks and cottons, hand dyed using natural and procion dyes and hand stitched.
The three Early Summer collages are the first in a series based upon the changes observed throughout the year.
Silk Road Graffiti series
This series of fabric collages was made in response to the exhibition about the Silk Route held in the British Library. The colours of the old manuscripts and the patterns made by the texts were inspiring, as were the stories behind the exhibits.
The fabrics are silks and cottons, dyed using natural ingredients. The pieces are sewn into a collage, and then hand embellished.
The series consists of 21 collages, each 5"x 5", 13 of which went to New Zealand as part of the International Collage Exchange. Others are in private collections.
